Why is empathy not infinite? And why does it necessarily lead to tolerating or normalizing odious views? I don't accept either of these premises but found the article interesting and somewhat compelling nonetheless. Perhaps the answer is that only a saint (or a hard core Trump supporter) could truly empathize with Trump. I think most of the people uttering words of sympathy are doing so performatively and inauthentically.
